Basketball players’ style — largely in the men’s league, but increasingly the women’s too — has become a bonafide pillar in fashion media and consumption. Basketball players’ style has more eyes on it than any other sport, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author Mitchell S. Jackson told CNN. “(The league) was the first to embrace it,” Jackson, author of the recently released photobook “Fly: The Big Book of Basketball Fashion,” explained. “Basketball players are so much a part of American culture. Bettman/Getty Images/Courtesy Workman“We talk a lot about current NBA tunnel style, but the league has been America’s most stylish for decades,” Schube continued.

CNN —Three men were arrested in the 1989 killing of a woman in Missouri after someone came forward with a tip over three decades after her death, authorities said. Kelle Ann Workman was reported missing on June 30, 1989, in Douglas County, and her body was found eight days later in a national forest in neighboring Christian County, officials from Douglas County said in a news conference on Wednesday. The arrests came after a person “in the last couple of months” gave law enforcement information tying the suspects to Workman’s killing, Douglas County Prosecuting Attorney Matt Weatherman said. The three men had been on authorities’ radar in relation to the cold case for some time, Douglas County Sheriff Chris Degase said Wednesday. Authorities did not provide information on the tipster who came forward, or the information that was shared.

REYKJAVIK, Iceland (AP) — Iceland’s president said the country is battling “tremendous forces of nature,” after molten lava from a volcano in the island’s southwest consumed several houses in the evacuated town of Grindavik. Johannesson said in a televised address late Sunday that “a daunting period of upheaval has begun on the Reykjanes peninsula,” where a long-dormant volcanic system has awakened. A volcano on the peninsula erupted for the second time in less than a month on Sunday morning. Authorities had ordered residents to leave the fishing town of Grindavik hours earlier as a swarm of small earthquakes indicated an imminent eruption. Top law firms call out antisemitism on college campuses
  + stars: | 2023-11-02 | by ( Matt Egan | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +5 min
New York CNN —Some of the nation’s most powerful law firms are warning America’s elite universities to crack down on antisemitism on campus – or the schools and their students will face real consequences. “Over the last several weeks, we have been alarmed at reports of anti-Semitic harassment, vandalism and assaults on college campuses, including rallies calling for the death of Jews and the elimination of the State of Israel,” more than two dozen law firms wrote in a letter obtained by CNN. The letter campaign was spearheaded by Joe Shenker, senior chair of Sullivan & Cromwell, according to the New York-based law firm. “One would hope that by the twenty-first century, antisemitism would have been relegated to the dustbin of history,” Columbia University leaders said in a statement. Last month, a Columbia student hanging up posters on campus in support of Israel was assaulted.

If the key driver of reboots is nostalgia — then the key driver of nostalgia is loneliness. Next, participants took Batcho's Nostalgia Inventory, a psychological test developed by Krystine Batcho in 1995 to quantify how deeply people feel nostalgia at a given time. If the key driver of reboots is nostalgia — then the key driver of nostalgia is loneliness. American health insurer Cigna has conducted a large loneliness survey since 2018, with over ten thousand respondents in the sample annually. In 2020, 61% of those surveyed were lonely, up 7 percentage points since the survey was first conducted in 2018.

But a different dynamic seemed to be emerging against the backdrop of vastly different expectations. He imagined an entirely different and urgent reaction, he said, if the child in the picture had been African American. The campus protests of the late 1960s sought in part to dismantle the in loco parentis role that colleges and universities had held in American life. Ten years ago, when the former New York City police commissioner, Ray Kelly, was invited to speak at Brown University, students objected. The current campus protests reflect the limits of the more bonded relationship that students and universities have forged.

Summary poll dataBENGALURU, Aug 30 (Reuters) - New Zealand house prices are forecast to rise again next year due to an ongoing supply shortage and expectations for interest rate cuts, according to a Reuters poll of property market analysts. That is short of a roughly 20% correction most property analysts predicted in May following a pandemic-era boom that boosted prices by more than 40%. Prices have started to rise again on returning demand meeting limited available supply. New Zealand house prices were expected to decline 4.8% this year, the latest Reuters poll of 11 property market analysts taken Aug. 14-28 showed. Average property prices were then expected to rise 5.0% and 6.0% in 2024 and 2025, respectively, an upgrade from 3.4% and 5.0% in the previous poll.

Their latest Gen Z salary transparency report found that, after surveying 1,853 Gen Z jobseekers, women expect a $6,200 lower average salary compared to men. "I was surprised that women are still asking for less money and have lower salary expectations," Workman tells CNBC Make It. Though women have historically been paid less than men, the gap has narrowed significantly since 1960. What's more, for every dollar paid to white dads, Black, Native American, and Latina moms earn 52 cents, 49 cents, and 47 cents, respectively. Several states, cities, and counties across the country have already passed legislation making salary transparency a requirement, including California, Colorado, Connecticut, Maryland, Nevada, Rhode Island, Washington and New York City.
College graduation ceremonies are a few months away, and plenty of Gen Zers are looking for one thing in their first jobs: some stability, for once. Students from the class of 2023, having experienced the majority of their college years through Covid, are resilient and adaptable but also want some semblance of normalcy: 85% of Gen Z job seekers say they're prioritizing stability in their job search, according to a new report from Handshake, a career site for college students and recent grads. On average, Gen Z job seekers define a "high" starting salary as paying $82,000 per year. Despite headlines of corporate downsizing, most workers have plenty of leverage in the current job market, and college seniors are paying attention, Workman says. Gen Z workers are driving salary transparency talksGen Z workers want stability to grow their careers, as well as to protect themselves against rising costs and a potential recession, Workman adds.
Some of the world's most powerful women are calling it quits. To give some context, for every woman stepping into a director-level leadership role, two are choosing to leave, says Alexis Krivkovich, McKinsey senior partner and an author of the joint Lean In and McKinsey "Women in the Workplace" report. The pattern has the potential to unwind decades of progress toward gender equity and increased female leadership in the workplace, she tells CNBC Make It. "They're meeting their goals and being successful, and some are choosing to leave before they get burned out," Workman adds. The problem remains that there are too few women in high levels of leadership, Krivkovich says: "Lots of men leave their positions, but we analyze and scrutinize when women leaders do in a different way.

Some 60 Manhattanites were questioned for the Trump Organization's tax-fraud jury. Here are the worst things said about Donald Trump during jury selection this week, in the 15th floor courtroom where the Trump Organization — the former president's golf-resort and real-estate empire — is on trial for tax-fraud charges. Three people who expressed dislike for Trump during jury selection, but who promised to be fair — a full quarter of the jury — were seated. Then he added this, his tone conciliatory: "He's a small man, but he's not on trial here." One woman, an advertising executive, was booted after telling a fellow prospective juror, "there is no chance in hell" she could be impartial.
